Arnold met with Columbia chiefs Canton, Nathanson, Josephson, and the Last Action
Hero writers. Black and Arnott were excused, after which Schwarzenegger said he loved
the script but still felt it needed more emotional depth. "We decided that we have
the best action script in town," said Schwarzenegger, "but now we need the value
of the relationship between the kid and me. So we decided we should give it to William
Goldman."
"It was Bill Goldman or nothing," said Josephson. The suits raced back to
Columbia, where Canton called the venerable writer of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,
All the President's Men, and Misery. Goldman made it clear that he was very busy but said
he was willing to read the Last Action Hero script. An offer and a script were Fed
Ex-ed to him in New York. Goldman called Canton and said he greatly admired Black and
Arnott's work but felt he had to pass...until Arnold called Goldman and made a direct
appeal, saying that he knew the writer could take the script that extra distance.
