Competed at the actual NABBA (National Amateur Body Builders Association = sponsor)
Mr. Universe show for the general public at the Victoria Palace Theatre, where nearly
3.000 people applauded the young man at his first international competition. Arnold
shocked the public with his 20-inch arms. Placed second in Mr Universe (amateur)
contest in London, England. He placed second in the amateur tall class to Chet (Chester)
Yorton, who went on to win the overall amateur title. Arnold had a great learning
experience about posing, flexing legs, skin color, zhe definition, the separation and
overall winner attitude - confidence! He also saw his weak points very clearly - his
calves and thighs. Victory would have been his if not for the last-minute entry of
America's Chet Yorton, who flexed his way to the title.

Arnold's legendary stage presence and charisma could already be felt, however. Ivan
Dunbar, writing in Health and Strength magazine, reported, "One felt that if it had
been left to the audience, Arnold would have been declared the winner then and
there." After this contest bodybuilding observers began physique comparisons between
Arnold and Reg Park.

Weg Bennet, who had been one of the Mr. Universe judges invited Arnold to his house for a
dinner after the contest. (Weg put Arnold in first place.) He and his family offered help
to young Arnold. Weg also contacted with Reg Park and told him that Arnold was quite
something - 19 and already weighing 230: He said "He's a big fan of yours, has seen
all your movies, and follows your training articles. I'd love to have you both on the same
show."

Arnold defended IFBB Mr. Olympia title at the Handelshof in Essen, West Germany, with
his father and mother in the audience. Also competiting were Franco (5th), Frank Zane
(4th), Serge Nubret (3rd) and Sergio Oliva (2nd). Sergio was so disgruntled by the
outcome, that he hadn't compete in an IFBB contest until 12 years later, when he finished
eighth at the 1984 Mr. Olympia extravaganza in New York.

Began shooting Red Sonja on location in Celano and Abruzzi (not far from Rome) in
Italy. Arnold role was considered as a cameo appearance (not a major role) in this sword
and sorcery film, also based on Robert E. Howard character. The idea was, that Red Sonja
would be the character in future Conan movies - and Conan in her movies. But because of
legalities, Conan's character was renamed to Kalidor.
